Sustainable management of open landscapes is the subject of a new set of guidelines [Hebrew] for planning and management in regional councils produced by the Association of Regional Councils in Israel, with support from Yad Hanadiv.
The Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel recently released the Sports Fisherman’s Code of Ethics as part of a broader effort to promote sustainable fishing in the Mediterranean. It has already attracted 3,000 signatures from supporters. A related boost to the Sea Use Best Practices component of Yad Hanadiv’s Marine Conservation Strategy came from The Agriculture Ministry’s announcement that it is considering imposing tighter restrictions on commercial fishing in the Mediterranean Sea and in the Sea of Galilee.
Professor Shafi Goldwasser will be the new Chair of the Rothschild Prizes steering committee. She holds joint appointments at the Weizmann Institute (Computer Science and Applied Mathematics) and MIT (Electrical Engineering and Computer Science) and leads the Theory of Computation Group at MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. Professor Goldwasser was a recipient of the 2012 Turing Award. She replaces Professor Etan Kohlberg, who served in the role for four years.

Israeli solar energy firm Sologic has installed the world’s first eTrees at Ramat Hanadiv. The canopies of solar panels supply free WiFi, charging stations, lighting and water coolers powered by the sun.

The Global Forum of the National Library of Israel met for the first time on 20-21 October. A public gathering was held in the presence of former President Shimon Peres and Lord Rothschild. The Forum was established as part of the National Library Renewal process, will meet bi-annually and be comprised of prominent leaders and creative thinkers from among the Jewish people and the world at large.
