Israel Initiative for Applied Education Research

The Initiative was founded in 2003 as a joint venture of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, the Ministry of Education, and Yad Hanadiv. Its aim is to provide evidence based, critically reviewed scientific research to decision makers, in order to assist their efforts to improve achievement in Israeli education. The Steering Committee, headed by the President of the Academy Professor Menahem Yaari, consults with leading officials in the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders in selecting the Initiative’s areas of activity.

The Initiative serves as a hub for the consulting activity which the Academy provides to the Government and to other authorities in the field of education. Since the beginning of 2010 it operates under the sole auspices of the Academy. The Initiative is designated to gain formal status as the Division of Education in a framework elaborated in a proposed amendment to the Law on the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities. This amendment would institutionalize and regulate the role of the Academy as advisor to the Government and to the various authorities (along the lines of the US National Research Council). The amendment was recently tabled at the Knesset.
